Okić, my dear homeland

1973 · Branka Kelečić-Sovulj

Branka Kelečić-Sovulj is a daughter of the Okić area, born on 11 February 1959 in Poljanica. After a few years she moved with her parents to Novo Selo Okićko, from where she attended the eight-year school in Repišće and Klinča Sela. She was noted at school for her essays and poems. Inspired by the beauties of her home country, in 1973 she composed the poem "Okiću, moj kraju mili" — "Okić, my dear homeland." The then conductor of the mixed choir "Dr. Antun Radić" from Okić and composer Viktor Šafranek, and the still-distinguished director Petar Krelja Sr., set this poem for mixed choir and dedicated it to their predecessor, conductor and teacher Ivan Plasaj.

I cannot gaze upon you enough,
Okić, my dear homeland,
with every passing day you grow more beautiful,
and with every day I admire you more.

Every person holds you dear,
throughout Croatia and beyond.
Every furrow is precious to them
and every stone upon this hillside.

I shall never go away from you,
Okić, my dear homeland,
and I shall leave my bones to you —
only stay with me always, and live on.
